Womens Film Festival Receives $40,000 in Financial Support The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that the 19th Annual St. Johns International Womens Film Festival has received $40,000 in operational support through the provinces 2008 Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP). "What started out as a grassroots event has developed into a unique, first-class, international festival," said Minister Jackman. "The Provincial Government recognizes this particular events value to the further development of our film sector, and is pleased to provide support once again this year." Minister Jackmans announcement was made to coincide with the festivals annual news conference, held this morning at the Newfoundland Independent Filmmakers Co-operative, where festival organizers announced this years lineup. Eighty-five films will be screened at the October 14-18 festival, 17 of which are local films, including the festival opener, Down to the Dirt, produced by Anna Petras and directed by Justin Simms. Festival Chair Noreen Golfman said there was a total of 480 submissions from 17 countries this year, which speaks to the growing international reputation of the festival. "Once again this year the program reflects a diversity of genres and subjects, formats and styles, but it most notably reflects the seriousness with which women have taken up the business of filmmaking," said Ms. Golfman.
