Beyond the Overpass Theatre Provided $25,000 for Operations

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced the Beyond the Overpass Theatre Company, headquartered in the Town of New-Wes-Valley, has received $25,000 in operational support through the arts component of the departments 2008 Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP).

"The theatre sector in Newfoundland and Labrador continues to contribute substantially to the cultural and economic development of the province," said Minister Jackman. "This operational support to the Beyond the Overpass Theatre Company is designed to support its production of the Seabird Theatre Festival. It is consistent with the Provincial Governments commitment to support professional artists in their endeavours and to further grow the arts and cultural sector throughout Newfoundland and Labrador."

Beyond the Overpass Theatre Company was established in 1998 to present performances at the Barbour Historic Village in Newtown (New-Wes-Valley), Bonavista Bay.

Bonavista North MHA Harry Harding said the growing popularity of the Seabird Theatre Festival is an indication of how the arts and cultural sector continues to generate economic activity in rural regions.

"Funding for cultural activities in our district is essential, as it provides our residents with opportunities to showcase and experience arts and culture produced in their community," said Mr. Harding. "In addition, this investment contributes to the economic and social development of our area, as it draws tourists to the region."

The 2008 Cultural Economic Development Program is providing about $1.2 million for operational and project support to the professional arts sector and $1.15 to the heritage sector, for a total of more than $2.3 million.
