Province Invests $81,400 in Bonavista Area Heritage

Heritage organizations in the Bonavista South region have received $81,400 in operational support and project funding through the Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP).

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, said the Bonavista Historic Townscape Foundation and the Bonavista Historical Society have received a total of $31,875 in operational funding to support their joint efforts to manage a series of historic buildings in the area. The Sir William F. Coaker Heritage Foundation has been provided with $33,630 in operational support.

"The Town of Bonavista is a treasure trove of historic buildings, and these community-based organizations are working diligently to preserve heritage structures and find ways in which they can contribute to the economic development of the area," Minister Jackman said. "Meanwhile, the Coaker Foundation is celebrating a very exciting year the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Fishermens Protective Union and the province is also supporting the foundations efforts to celebrate and commemorate that event in the Port Union area."

Other Bonavista South heritage initiatives funded this year through CEDP are:

  • Bonavista Historical Society $6,000 to provide an internship opportunity to a recent graduate in the area of archival collection management. The intern will develop skills in assessing, arranging and preserving the archival collections of the society and the Town of Bonavista.
  • Tourism Elliston Inc. $8,590 for operational support.
  • Kings Cove Historical Society $1,305 for operational support.
  • Roger Fitzgerald, MHA for Bonavista South, welcomed the investment in heritage initiatives.

"The District of Bonavista South is blessed with several historic attractions that draw many visitors each year to our beautiful communities," said Mr. Fitzgerald. "This investment will certainly assist in both the development and preservation of our unique culture and heritage."

The 2008 Cultural Economic Development Program is providing $1.15 million for operational and project support to the heritage sector, and about $1.2 million to the professional arts sector, for a total of more than $2.3 million.

CEDP projects are selected based on the strength of the business plans, vision and potential for development within the sector. For more information on the CEDP program and application guidelines, visit: www.tcr.gov.nl.ca/tcr/services_programs/cedp/heritage/.
