Province Acquires 67 Works Under Art Bank Program

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has once again expanded and enhanced its collection of original works of art with the addition of 67 pieces purchased under the 2007 Art Bank Program, administered through The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery.

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, noted the significance of the Art Bank Program (formerly known as the Art Procurement Program), and the contribution of visual artists and their works to the province.

"The purchased pieces are incredible and represent a wide range of art including photography, etchings, textiles, sculptures, and more," Minister Jackman said. "The Art Bank Program benefits both visual artists and residents of the province. It serves to publicly promote emerging and established local talent, acquire works of significance to the province, and support the vibrant cultural heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador."

With these purchases, the Art Bank collection has risen to a total of 2,653 pieces. The newly-purchased works (See Backgrounder) will be displayed in public buildings throughout the province for years to come

"I thank all artists who submitted works for consideration," Minister Jackman said. "The Provincial Governments cultural strategy, Creative Newfoundland and Labrador (2006) supports excellence in artistic endeavors, the creative process, and sustaining the provinces distinctive cultural identity."

The strategy included a $50,000 increase to the Art Bank Program, from $75,000 to the current $125,000 annual allocation.

Since 1982, the Provincial Government has been recognizing and promoting the work of Newfoundland and Labrador artists by purchasing and exhibiting original artwork in public buildings. The Art Bank Program offers visual artists a chance to showcase their work to a wide audience, while also increasing the publics awareness of the importance of arts and culture in our daily lives.

The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery manages the submissions and adjudication process, as well as ongoing support and care for the acquisitions. The Art Bank Program jury is made up of five regional representatives from the arts community.
