Vote Online to Bring Hockeyville to Port aux Basques

Port aux Basques has been selected as one of 10 finalists in Kraft Hockeyville 2008, a competition that searches for the Canadian community that best embodies the spirit of hockey and hometown pride and all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians can help the town win through an online vote.

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today encouraged Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to vote for Port aux Basques online at //www.cbc.ca/hockeyville/ in order to get the town into the top five.

The final winning community will have an NHL pre-season game hosted in the community arena; a CBC Hockey Night in Canada broadcast from the community, and $100,000 to be used for upgrading their home arena. The deadline for voting is Saturday, February 23, at 11 a.m. People can vote as often as they wish.

"Vote early, vote often," Minister Jackman said. "Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are well-known for supporting our own in these competitions. I therefore encourage residents to pull together once again this time in support of Port aux Basques - and to convey that message to friends and family outside the province as well."

The CBC Hockeyville website features a short video of each nominated community which displays their spirit and passion for the sport of hockey.

"Ive seen the Port aux Basque video and it appears the whole town is involved," Minister Jackman said. "Their spirit is infectious and is already spreading across the province."

Port aux Basques Mayor Brian Button said a win would mean a great deal to his community.

"Winning this competition would be phenomenal, not only for the town, but also for all the patrons who use the arena," Mayor Button said. "The prize money of $100,000, or even the top five prize money of $20,000, would certainly help maintain the arena."

Kraft Hockeyville 2008 is sponsored by Kraft Canada, together with the CBC, the National Hockey League (NHL), and the NHL Players Association. Port aux Basques has a long and proud history when it comes to the sport of hockey. In the 1980s the talent of the Senior A Mariners was drawing fans from throughout the province. The Mariners folded in 1989, just after winning the Canadian Senior Hockey Championship.
