Minister Names Chef de Mission, Encourages Applicants
for 2009 Canada Summer Games Mission Staff

Clayton Welsh, a recreation and sports consultant with the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, has been appointed Chef de Mission for Team Newfoundland and Labrador for the Canada Summer Games, to be held August 15-29, 2009 in Prince Edward Island.

Mr. Welsh is a former president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association. He was the Chef de Mission for the 2007 Canada Winter Games in the Yukon, the Assistant Chef de Mission for the 2003 Canada Winter Games held in New Brunswick and a member of the mission staff for the 2005 Canada Summer Games held in Saskatchewan. He has also participated in the games as an official, and assisted in coaching the provinces 1993 Summer Games soccer team.

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, said Mr. Welsh clearly brings a wealth of knowledge, expertise and organizational experience to the position.

"The Canada Games are the nations premier multi-sport event, and the Chef de Mission, along with the volunteer mission staff, will be integral in ensuring our athletes have the experience of a lifetime," Minister Jackman said.

The minister also encouraged individuals interested in amateur sport to apply to become a part of the mission staff. The department is seeking an Assistant Chef de Mission, along with 18 volunteer mission staff members. Candidates should have a thorough knowledge of the provinces amateur sport system, and have interest in working in a fast-pace and multi-sport environment.

"The individuals selected will play a significant role in helping this provinces top amateur athletes become part of a winning team," Minister Jackman said. "They should be prepared for hard work, but can also expect the experience to be enjoyable and rewarding."

As part of Team Newfoundland and Labrador, members of the mission staff team will work with Tourism, Culture and Recreation officials and will be responsible for all aspects of Team Newfoundland and Labradors preparation, including, but not limited to, athlete services, team uniforms, media relations, registration, transportation and sport technical packages. Selected mission staff members will be expected to attend the games for one week; either from August 14-22 or from August 22-29, 2009.

The Canada Games began in 1967 and Newfoundland and Labrador has been represented in every games since. The province hosted the 1977 Canada Summer Games in St. John's and the 1999 Canada Winter Games in Corner Brook. The games are held every two years, alternating summer and winter.
