Dates Set for 2008 Forest Fire Season

As the temperatures rise and people begin to frequent the provinces wilderness areas, the Department of Natural Resources reminds everyone to be cognizant of the potential for forest fires and act responsibly this forest fire season.

Forest fire season on the island begins today, May 1, while the season for Labrador starts May 15. The season ends on the island and in Labrador on September 30.

"We all benefit from our forest resources, socially and economically, and we all have a role in protecting it for the future," said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency. "I encourage all outdoor enthusiasts be vigilant and ensure all fires are always properly extinguished."

In Budget 2008, the Provincial Government is clearly demonstrating its commitment for the protection of the provinces forest resources by investing $30 million to begin the replacement of six water bombers.

A Permit to Burn is required, at no cost, for lighting outdoor fires for the purpose of clearing land or burning brush within 300 metres of a forest during the forest fire season. The lighting of fires for cooking and camping do not require a permit, but certain guidelines must be followed:

Ensure adequate amounts of water are on hand to extinguish the fire;

Never leaving a fire unattended;

Have quick access to tools, such as round-topped shovels and pick-axes, to clear ground to make fire breaks; and,

Avoid the lighting of fires in high wind.

The Department of Natural Resources has 117 seasonal forest firefighters to fight fires throughout the province this season. Conservation officers will also be available to provide support if required.

The Provincial Government also operates a fleet of six water bombers and four light helicopters during the forest fire season. Water bombers are strategically situated around the province − two in Gander and one each in Deer Lake, St. Johns, Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Wabush.

Permits and regulations can be obtained at the regional or district forest management offices around the province. Information is also available on the web site at www.gov.nl.ca/nr
