Deadline for Disaster Recovery Financial Assistance Claims Approaches

Fire and Emergency Services Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL), will accept disaster recovery financial assistance applications until 4:30 p.m. on October 31, 2008, for damages incurred by a large weather system from July 29 to July 31, 2008. The storm which included severe thunder storms and heavy rainfall caused considerable damage to many homes and businesses in Gambo and the surrounding area.

"Many families experienced significant property loss during the flooding," said the Honourable Dave Denine, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services Newfoundland and Labrador. "The Provincial Government responded quickly and assured residents that it would provide financial assistance to aid in getting these communities back to normal."

To date, FES-NL has received 80 applications, which are anticipated to be the vast majority of claims. Residents and business owners who have not yet submitted an application are reminded to provide a comprehensive list of all damaged items, accompanied by pictures and/or video footage. They should also clearly photograph and document any visible interior and exterior structural damage to their homes.

"It is essential for this and any future events that residents and business thoroughly record and document all damages," said Minister Denine. "The better the documentation, the more efficiently a claim can be processed."

Individuals or businesses seeking a disaster recovery financial assistance package or assistance with the claim application may contact FES-NL at 1-888-395-5611 or e-mail nlemo@gov.nl.ca until the October 31, 2008 deadline.
