Government Accepting Applications for
Community Enhancement Employment Program

The Provincial Government is now accepting applications for funding under the Community Enhancement Employment Program. The Honourable Dave Denine, Minister of Municipal Affairs, announced today that the deadline for this years program is July 31, 2008, which is a month earlier than in previous years.

The $4.5 million Community Enhancement Employment Program is a provincially-funded, targeted employment program that creates short-term employment for eligible participants. Employment is provided through projects that provide a long-term benefit to communities. These projects focus on the following key areas: public health and safety; economic development; community infrastructure; and beautification.

"The Community Enhancement Employment Program provides necessary employment opportunities to individuals in rural communities where need is evident," said Minister Denine. "We have made a concerted effort to meet the challenge of employment support in rural Newfoundland and Labrador through attracting a broad scope of quality projects that will provide more meaningful work for eligible participants and better value to communities."

The program funds community-based organizations to sponsor and manage employment projects. Examples of eligible sponsor groups are community-based agencies, service groups, church groups, municipal councils, local service district committees, development associations, womens institutes and heritage groups. Examples of eligible projects include those related to municipal infrastructure, tourism initiatives, community health and wellness programs, facilitating the active participation of seniors in their communities, cultural or natural heritage, arts and crafts development, restoration of heritage sites, environmental improvements, aquaculture infrastructure, agrifoods infrastructure and other labour-intensive initiatives.

"We are pleased to increase funding for this program by $500,000 from last year," said Minister Denine. "We understand the need to provide meaningful, short-term employment opportunities in rural areas while supporting the economic development of these communities."
