Municipal Affairs April 2, 2008 Province Provides $45,000 to Support Beaumont Hamel Pilgrimage The Honourable Dave Denine, Minister of Municipal Affairs, has announced a $45,000 contribution to the Royal Canadian Legion, Newfoundland and Labrador Command, in support of the 2008 pilgrimage to Beaumont Hamel, France. "We are proud to provide funding support to help send a delegation of veterans, students and chaperones to commemorative ceremonies this July in Beaumont Hamel to recognize the contributions of members of the Newfoundland Regiment," said Minister Denine. "The anniversary ceremonies mark the significant sacrifices made by those who fought for the protection of our freedom, and represents an opportunity to pay tribute and recognize the contributions of veterans." The 11-person delegation attending the 2008 pilgrimage to Beaumont Hamel will include veteran representatives from branches across the province, students chosen through an essay, poem and poster competition, a registered nurse, student chaperon, and representative from the Royal Canadian Legion, Newfoundland and Labrador Command. "We would like to acknowledge the assistance of the Provincial Government to support this important journey and provide the opportunity for a contingent from Newfoundland and Labrador to participate in the annual pilgrimage to Beaumont Hamel to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice," said Provincial President Dave Flannigan. -30-
