Six Communities in Central Newfoundland to Benefit from
Canada/Newfoundland and Labrador Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund

The federal and provincial governments today announced more than $1.5 million from the Canada/Newfoundland and Labrador Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF) for projects in six communities throughout Central Newfoundland.

The announcement was made by the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador, on behalf of the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA); and the Honourable Dave Denine, Minister of Municipal Affairs in the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

"These projects will be of tremendous benefit to the communities involved," said Minister Hearn. "Our investment of more than $520,000 will allow these communities to replace aging equipment and make general improvements to their water and waste water systems to ensure safer, cleaner communities."

"Municipalities require reliable and efficient infrastructure and we are pleased to contribute over $720,000 which will support water and sewer upgrades in the communities of Musgrave Harbour, Norris Arm, Peterview, Pleasantview, Port Blandford and Seldom-Little Seldom," said Minister Denine. "Investments in municipal infrastructure are vital to ensure modern services for residents, and support our commitment for sustainable communities in Newfoundland and Labrador."

The Town of Musgrave Harbour will extend its current water and sewer system through a contribution of $155,686 from the federal government and $203,949 from the province. The community will provide $107,424 for a total of $467,058.

The Town of Norris Arm will install a water filtration system and improve its current water supply with a total contribution of $119,657. The federal share will be $39,886 and the province will provide $56,311 with the municipal share at $29,660.

The Town of Peterview will relocate its water main. Total project costs are $198,954, with a share of $66,318 from the federal government, $93,508 from the province and $39,128 from the municipality.

The nearby town of Pleasantview will upgrade both its pumping system and chlorination system with an overall project of $46,001, with the federal share are $15,334 and the province providing $21,620 with the town�s share at $9,047.

The Town of Port Blandford will improve its current water system through a $234,008 project with $78,003 from the federal government, $109,984 from the province and $46,021 from the municipality.

The Fogo Island community of Seldom-Little Seldom will make upgrades to the existing pumphouse with a total project cost of $500,606. The federal share of the total is $166,896, while the province is providing $235,285 and the municipal share is $98,452.

The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador MRIF Agreement is administered jointly by the Department of Municipal Affairs on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and ACOA, on behalf of Infrastructure Canada. Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, acting on behalf of communities, helps set the strategic direction of the Agreement and identify priorities under the capacity-building component of the agreement.
