Well-Being of People Living on North Coast of Labrador Highlights Ministers Visit

Today, the Honourable Patty Pottle, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs, along with the Honourable Ross Wiseman, Minister of Health and Community Services, and the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, travel to the north coast of Labrador to meet with community leaders and to tour local infrastructure. An extensive schedule has been planned, with visits to Rigolet, Makkovik, Postville, Hopedale, Natuashish and Nain. The ministers will be accompanied by Boyd Rowe, Chief Executive Officer of Labrador Grenfell Health.

"It gives me great pride to extend a warm welcome to Ministers Wiseman and Jackman to the beautiful north coast of Labrador," said Minister Pottle. "This trip will give my Cabinet colleagues the invaluable opportunity to tour local health, recreation and cultural facilities, meet with Aboriginal and community leaders, and experience first-hand, the unique lifestyle challenges faced by people who live on the Labrador coast."

On the morning of Wednesday, October 1, Minister Wiseman will also visit with students of a new social work program being offered by Labrador-Grenfell Health and the Nunatsiavut Government, in partnership with St. Thomas University. Offered for the first time this year, the program has been established to enhance recruitment efforts for social workers in the region.

"I am very pleased to have this opportunity to visit coastal Labrador," said Minister Wiseman. "During the next couple of days, we will meet with community leaders and government officials, visit offices of Child, Youth and Family Services, and tour health clinics that provide quality care and services for the people of this region. This will be an excellent opportunity for me, as minister, to meet face-to-face with the people on the ground to discuss a number of matters important to the residents of this region."

Minister Jackman will tour recreation and cultural facilities and meet with various stakeholders during the visit.

"This is my first visit to the north coast of Labrador as Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, and I look forward to seeing first-hand the work being done to preserve and promote cultural traditions and to increase physical activity," said Minister Jackman.
