Labradors Potential Featured at Northern Development Ministers Forum

Labrador has phenomenal potential for economic development. The Honourable John Hickey, Minister of Labrador Affairs, spoke about opportunities in the region while attending the Northern Development Ministers Forum (NDMF) taking place in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories this week. The theme of this years forum is Developing the Tourism Potential of Canadas North.

"Labrador is the ideal destination for the adventure seeker," said Minister Hickey. "It offers a unique experience in an unspoiled wilderness that leaves a lasting impression with all travellers. When all of that is combined with a distinct, rich and vibrant cultural heritage featuring a diversity of peoples, there is no question that Labrador is a world-class travel destination."

Minister Hickey spoke about tourism and other economic development opportunities during the NDMF while providing an annual update on Labrador initiatives. Delegates were briefed on efforts to market Labrador as a premier travel destination. Minister Hickey explained how Destination Labrador, a publicly funded organization designed to improve marketing readiness of tourism products, marketing initiatives and product development, is currently designing a dedicated Labrador marketing program. Over the past three years, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, through the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, has provided $300,000 to Destination Labrador for its tourism and marketing programs.

"For the outdoor enthusiast, or the explorer looking to experience a place of culture and history like no other, Labrador truly is a dream destination," said Minister Hickey. "We have the world-class Torngat National Park in northern Labrador and look forward to the eventual establishment of the proposed Mealy Mountain National Park in central Labrador. We provide active vacation experiences in which people can hunt, fish, kayak, swim, ski and hike − to name a few. Travellers can take in those thrilling activities, all couched in culture and traditions that go back thousands of years."

The NDMF provides federal, provincial and territorial ministers representing Canadas north an opportunity to advance common interests and raise awareness of northern issues and accomplishments. Other themes featured at this years forum included: maximizing economic and social impacts, northern innovation, and climate change.

Minister Hickey also briefed delegates on efforts under the Northern Strategic Plan for Labrador to improve programs and services throughout the region. The plan is currently in its second year of a five-year mandate in which over $300 million will be spent in new and ongoing initiatives. As well, the minister discussed ongoing improvements to Labradors transportation infrastructure, developments in mining and energy, and opportunities in employment and education.

"Labrador is prospering," said Minister Hickey. "We continue to work with communities to promote economic development and diversification. With ongoing strategic investment and implementation of the Northern Strategic Plan for Labrador, the region will continue to grow and be an exciting place to live and work."
