Town of Hearts Delight-Islington Receives Funding to Develop Marina and Boat Basin

The Town of Hearts Delight-Islington is developing a recreational marina and boat basin with a $51,938 investment from the Provincial Government. The new facility has the potential to encourage economic development in the area and improve its attractiveness as a destination for recreational boaters.

"The community of Hearts Delight-Islington is well-known among recreational boaters and a new marina provides visitors with a safe, accessible, and fully-serviced facility," said the Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. "The new facility will enhance the experience of recreational boaters visiting the area, and provide the basis to stimulate greater business activity."

Development of the recreational marina and boat basin includes the construction and placement of floating docks, along with the expansion of dockside water and electrical facilities. Enhancements to the marina add to the areas attractiveness and help position the province as a boating destination offering high-quality services and amenities to visitors.

"The Trinity Bay area has the potential to be a marine tourism destination for resident and non-resident boaters," said the Honourable Charlene Johnson, MHA, Trinity - Bay de Verde. "I anticipate the facility strengthening the tourism potential of the Baccalieu Trail, complementing the local golf course and providing the venue for other activities such as whale watching and sea kayaking."

The project is overseen by the Hearts Delight-Islington Enhancement Committee. Formed in 2001, the not-for-profit organization is focused on the development of sustainable initiatives that generate economic growth. To date, it has targeted the tourism sector to capitalize on the areas scenery and proximity to larger centres.

"The Hearts Delight-Islington Enhancement Committee welcomes the financial assistance and support of the Provincial Government in the development of this facility," said Robert Hiscock of the Hearts Delight-Islington Enhancement Committee." Our efforts to generate both short and long-term economic growth and diversification, as well as the promotion of the regions tourism potential, are greatly enhanced by this venture."

Funding for this project is provided through the Provincial Governments Regional/Sectoral Diversification Fund (RSDF). RSDF is a $5-million fund that provides non-repayable contributions to economic development agencies for initiatives that address regional and sectoral development and diversification.
