ACE Memorial to Represent Canada in Singapore

Student-run Advancing Canadian Entrepreneurship (ACE) Memorial is receiving $20,000 from the Provincial Government to represent Canada at the Student in Free Enterprise (SIFE) World Cup in Singapore in October.

"ACE Memorial has been instrumental in fostering an innovative and entrepreneurial culture in Newfoundland and Labrador," said the Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development.  "Its work and important contribution to the province have been widely-celebrated. They have helped solidify the provinces reputation for excellence and innovation in the international academic and business communities."

ACE Memorial is part of a national network of university students who have established ACE organizations in their universities.  ACE organizations gather annually in a national competition to showcase their projects and how well they represent and exemplify SIFE criteria an award that ACE Memorial recently won for the third consecutive year.

"ACE Memorial demonstrates great leadership in spearheading community projects that promote business and entrepreneurial principles and practical skills," said the Honourable Paul Oram, Minister of Business. "Our government is pleased to lend its support to the team as they represent Canada at the SIFE World Cup.  As they compete in Singapore, not only will they show the world how their initiatives enrich the community, they will also promote Newfoundland and Labrador to a global business audience. I know that they will do their university, province, and country proud."

The SIFE World Cup is a culmination of more than 45 countries that represent the best SIFE organizations from around the world.  On October 1, ACE Memorial will send 22 people, along with two faculty advisors and the Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration to the international competition.

"As the faculty advisor, I see first-hand the impact our projects have on our communities," said Lynn Morrissey of ACE Memorial.  "These students are passionate about their province and work hard to make a difference. The support of our Provincial Government helps make this possible."

The Departments of Business, and Innovation, Trade and Rural Development each provided $10,000 to ACE Memorial to help pay for its participation in the 2008 SIFE World Cup.

"In our 2006 innovation strategy, Innovation Newfoundland and Labrador: A Blueprint for Prosperity we identified support for youth innovation as a key element for creating a culture of innovation," said Minister Taylor.  "Inspiring young people with the concepts of innovation and entrepreneurship is an integral part of creating this culture.  ACE Memorials initiatives and participation in the SIFE World Cup support this goal."

"We are extremely proud of these young women and men," said the Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Education. "They are a great example of how our post-secondary education system is truly preparing our students to compete in the global marketplace. And these enterprising university students are also providing a great service to the youth of Newfoundland and Labrador they are introducing business basics to younger students. They are showing them the opportunities that exist with a little determination and imagination. I congratulate each member of the team and wish them all the best for the future. "
