The Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today thanked Tom Rideout, Member of the House of Assembly (MHA) for the District of Baie Verte-Springdale, for his many years of public service.

Mr. Rideout is to be commended for his many years of dedicated service to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, said Premier Williams.  Whether as a Premier, opposition or government member, Mr. Rideout has had a long and distinguished career as a politician in this province and I thank him for his contributions.

Before entering politics in 1975, Mr. Rideout taught high school at St. Theresas All-Grade School in Fleur de Lys and served as a teacher and vice-principal at St. Pius X Central High School in Baie Verte.

Upon entering politics and his election in 1975, he served as the Member of the House of Assembly for the District of Baie Verte-White Bay until 1991.  Mr. Rideout served as the provinces fourth Premier in 1989.

In 1997, Mr. Rideout graduated from the University of Ottawa Law School with a Baccalaureate of Laws (LLB) and was admitted to the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1998.

In the 1999, Mr. Rideout was elected in the District of Lewisporte and was re-elected in 2003.  In the October 9, 2007, provincial general election, he was elected to represent the District of Baie Verte-Springdale.  Between 2003 and 2008, he served in the positions of Minister of Transportation and Works, Minister Responsible for Aboriginal Affairs, Attorney General, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Government House Leader and Deputy Premier.

Mr. Rideout brought passion and conviction to his role as an MHA and I am confident that he will be remembered as a proud Newfoundlander and Labradorian, added Premier Williams.  For over three decades in public life, he served the people of the province he loved in several capacities and has done so with sincerity and a genuine desire to effect meaningful and positive change.  I wish Tom and his family the very best for a happy and blessed future.
