$1.5 Million Allocated for Road Improvements in Labrador West

The Labrador West region is the latest recipient of funding under the $66.5 million Provincial Roads Improvement Program of Budget 2007. The Honourable John Hickey, Minister of Transportation and Works, today announced an investment of $1.5 million for upgrades in the area.

"This government has made huge strides in addressing the state of our province's roads," said Minister Hickey. "In particular, we have made significant investment in the Big Land with even more to come."

In Labrador West, the Provincial Government will upgrade and resurface sections of Route 500, the Trans Labrador Highway between Labrador City and the Quebec Border, and Route 503 between Wabush and Labrador City.

"I am quite pleased with this substantial investment in road improvements for my district," said Jim Baker, MHA for Labrador West. "The funding will go a long way to address the deteriorating conditions on this section of highway and will create better driving conditions for motorists in the area."

This is the second year of governments six-year strategy for infrastructure improvements exceeding $2 billion. Government estimates the Provincial Roads Improvement Program creates 1,200 person years of employment, with 94 per cent of the work being done in rural areas.
