Motorists will be pleased with this years road improvements in the Harbour Main-Whitbourne Area. The Honourable John Hickey, Minister of Transportation and Works, today announced an investment of $2.2 million for road repairs in the area.

"This is another example of governments continued commitment to improving transportation infrastructure throughout the province," said Minister Hickey. "We recognize that there is a need for improvements to our roads network and have therefore allocated $66.5 million for the Provincial Roads Improvement Program."

The road projects planned for the district of Harbour Main-Whitbourne are:

  • Repair rutting problem, Trans Canada Highway, Salmonier Line to Roaches Line;
  • Upgrade and resurface a section of Route 71 in South River from the intersection with Route 70 towards Mackinsons;
  • Complete the upgrading of Harbour Drive, Colliers;
  • Upgrade and resurface a section of Chapels Cove Road, Harbour Main;
  • Resurface a section of Route 60 at North Arm, Holyrood;
  • Upgrade and pave a section of Route 60, from Keatings Road intersection in Harbour Main towards Holyrood;
  • Upgrade and pave a section of Route 63, Avondale Access Road.
  • The Honourable Tom Hedderson, MHA for the District of Harbour Main-Whitbourne, said: "I am very pleased with this significant investment for road infrastructure in my district. This increased funding will allow substantial upgrading of the road system and will go a long way to improving driving conditions for the traveling public in the Harbour Main-Whitbourne area."

    Government estimates the Provincial Roads Improvement Program creates 1,200 person years of employment, with 94 per cent of the work being done in rural areas.

    This is the second year of governments six-year strategy for infrastructure improvements exceeding $2 billion.
