Bay of Islands Receives $800,000 for Road Improvements

All signs point toward better roads for motorists in the Bay of Islands area.

The Honourable John Hickey, Minister of Transportation and Works, today announced an investment of $800,000 for road improvements in the district of Bay of Islands.

"The need for funding in this district was apparent and we have responded with this significant investment," said Minister Hickey. "This is the largest allocation of funds in Bay of Islands for the Provincial Roads Improvement Program in the last six years."

An extra $6.5 million has been added to this years Provincial Roads Improvement Program bringing the total investment to $66.5 million.

The projects planned for the district of Bay of Islands this year are:

  • Resurface section of Route 440, Irishtown towards Summerside;
  • Resurface various sections of Route 450;
  • Repair road settlement on Route 440 at McIvers.

Government estimates the Provincial Roads Improvement Program creates 1,200 person years of employment, with 94 per cent of the work being done in rural areas.

This is the second year of governments six-year strategy for infrastructure improvements exceeding $2 billion.
