Kinsmen Club Donates Original Charter Document to The Rooms Provincial Archives

The original 1939 Charter document of the Kinsmen Club of St. Johns has been presented to The Rooms Provincial Archives for preservation.

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, and provincial archivist/director Greg Walsh accepted the donation of the document during a Kinsmen Club meeting December 17.

"The document is a special piece of history because this particular Kinsmen Club is the only Kinsmen Club of Canada which was ever chartered outside of Canada," Minister Jackman said. "Preserving this document will help people learn more about the Kinsmen Club of St. Johns, an organization that has been of great service to the city and its residents for almost 70 years."

On the back of the document frame are over 20 signatures of club members who attended "Charter Night" at the Bella Vista Social Club on November 20, 1939. The signatures, which are being preserved as well, include prominent St. Johns names such as Jim Chaulker, John C. Crosbie, Percy Crosbie, Victor Clouston, James Higgins, and Dr. Louis Conroy (Charter President).

"Our club is extremely pleased that this historic document has found a safe home within The Rooms Provincial Archives," said Danny Pond, President of the Kinsmen Club of St. John's. "It is as much a piece of Newfoundland and Labrador history as it is a piece of our club's history, and we encourage the public to take the opportunity to view it."

During the presentation, copies of the charter and the signature sheet were provided to club members as keepsakes. The original copy will be stored at The Rooms Provincial Archives.
