Six individuals who have made outstanding contributions to sport in
Newfoundland and Labrador were honoured Saturday, November 3, with
induction into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame.
The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister Tourism, Culture and
Recreation, today congratulated 2007 inductees William "Bill" Breen of
St. John�s; former Bell Islander Mike Kelly, who currently lives in
Gander; and former St. Lawrence native Tom Tarrant, who currently lives
in Inverary, Ontario; all of whom were entered into the Hall of Fame in
the Athlete category; Matthew J. Foster, originally of Broughshane,
Ireland, now living in St. John�s; and Robert P. Hillier of Mount Pearl,
who were inducted in the Builder category; as well as former St. John�s
native Gordon C. Follett, who now lives in Outer Cove, who was inducted
in the Athlete/Builder category.
"Induction into the Hall of Fame is a tremendous achievement and
recognizes the commitment and contribution these individuals have made
to sport in this province," Minister Jackman said. "I sincerely
congratulate them, and thank them, for the efforts they have made to
further the development of sport in Newfoundland and Labrador."
The Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and
Employment, attended Saturday�s induction ceremony on behalf of Minister
Jackman.
"It was great to see these athletes and builders recognized for their
accomplishments," Minister Skinner said. "This is a prestigious honour,
and reflects the level of talent and dedication that exists within our
provincial sport community."
Since 1973, the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame has
paid tribute to individuals, groups, associations, families or teams
� on the
basis of playing ability, sportsmanship and character � who have
achieved distinction in amateur and professional athletics. It also
honours, and records for history, those who have made a major
contribution to the development and advancement of sport in this
province.
