The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

Provincial Cross Country Running Championships in Ferryland This Weekend

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador will declare four team champions and four individual champions in cross country running this coming weekend. Baltimore High in Ferryland is the host school for the over 150 runners, who will compete in the four races.

Competitors will have an opportunity to walk through the course at 9:00 a.m. Elementary races will take place immediately following. The first SSNL race will be the Junior Girls race at 11:00 a.m. The junior girls will run a two km course. Teams will consist of five runners with the top four runners scoring team points. Junior girls teams vying for the team title include Mobile Central High, Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista), Smallwood Academy (Gambo), Baie Verte High, Stephenville High, Roncalli High (Avondale) and Mountain Field Academy (Forteau). These winners will be joined by athletes who have qualified as individual runners from St. James Regional High (Port aux Basques), Cape John Collegiate (LaScie), Lester Pearson Memorial (Wesleyville) and Cow Head School.

The Junior Boys race will race over a distance of three km. Teams entered include St. Lawrence Academy, Glovertown Academy, Stephenville High, Canon Richards High (Flowers Cove) and Baltimore High. Other individual runners include representatives from Mobile High, Brother Rice Junior High (St. John�s), Cape John Collegiate, Roncalli High (Port Saunders), Appalachia High (St. George�s) and St. Joseph�s Academy (Lamaline).

The Senior Girls race is set for 1:00 p.m. and is also run on the three km course. Joining the host, Baltimore High in vying for the title are O�Donel High (Mount Pearl), St. Lawrence Academy, Stephenville High, Carbonear Collegiate, Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point) and Menihek High (Labrador City). Smallwood Academy (Gambo), Corner Brook High, Victoria All Grade (Gaultois), Baie Verte High, Cape John Collegiate, Booth Memorial and Marystown Central High will all send individual runners.

The last race of the day is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The Senior Boys race is over a five km course. Competing for the team championship banner will be Baltimore High, Holy Heart of Mary (St. John�s), Carbonear Collegiate, St. Lawrence Academy, Lester Pearson Memorial (Wesleyville), Piccadilly High, Henry Gordon Academy (Cartwright) and Menihek High. Rounding out the field will be individual runners from Mealy Mountain Collegiate (Goose Bay), J.C. Erhardt Memorial (Makkovik), Stephenville High, Corner Brook High, Viking Trail Academy, Victoria All Grade (Gaultois), Cape John Collegiate, Roncalli High (Avondale), Booth Memorial and Indian River High (Springdale).

The top teams will be awarded with gold and silver medals, while the top team in each division will receive a championship banner. Individual winners will be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals.

R.B.C. has joined as a major partner of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador.
