Minister Announces $30,000 in Funding to Association of Cultural Industries

Newfoundland and Labradors cultural sector received a significant boost today with an investment of $30,000 under the Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP) to the Association of Cultural Industries (ACI).

"The Association of Cultural Industries is an important voice for artists and cultural workers in Newfoundland and Labrador. This funding represents the Provincial Governments dedication to enhancing cultural industries in communities across Newfoundland and Labrador," said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "Keeping and fostering our creative talent is an important direction for year two of our cultural plan Creative Newfoundland and Labrador: The Blueprint for Development and Investment in Culture, a $17.6 million three-year strategy to promote and preserve the provinces culture and heritage."

The funding granted under the CEDP is directed towards the yearly operations of ACI, a not-for-profit advocacy and research organization that serves as a unified voice for cultural workers and associations across Newfoundland and Labrador. ACI conducts research on vital arts issues that span the provincial art sectors and seeks to encourage the growth and resource management necessary to strengthen and enhance the quality of life for artists.

"ACI appreciates the strength of its ongoing relationship with the Provincial Government and, in particular, Minister Hedderson and the staff of Tourism, Culture and Recreation," said ACI Executive Director George Murray. "Given the recent revitalization and enormous growth in ACIs membership and scope, this funding is more important than ever if we are to reach and advocate on behalf of all the artistic sectors of Newfoundland and Labrador."

Under the CEDP, the Provincial Government will invest a total of $2.15 million this year to assist with the development of arts and heritage initiatives across the province. The arts sector will receive support for operations, marketing, professional development and export for cultural products. The heritage sector will receive support to assist with conservation, presentation and interpretation of heritage resources, as well as professional development for heritage professionals.

CEDP projects are selected on the strength of business plans, artistic vision and potential for development within a specific sector. For more information on guidelines, please check out www.tcr.gov.nl.ca/tcr/services_and_programs.htm.
