2007 Arts and Letters Awards Recipients Announced

The creativity and excellence of Newfoundland and Labradors artists were celebrated at a gathering of artists and art lovers Saturday evening at The Rooms, St. Johns. The Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, and Kevin Major, author and chairperson of the Arts and Letters Committee, presented the 2007 Arts and Letters Awards.

"Our government recognizes that Newfoundland and Labrador artists are the true founders of our creative spirit, and for that reason, in Budget 2007 we continue to invest significantly as part of year two of our cultural plan Creative Newfoundland and Labrador: The Blueprint for Development and Investment In Culture, a $17.6 million three-year strategy to promote and preserve the provinces cultural sector. This strategy continues to help provide a balanced approach to support artists and the creative process," said Minister Hedderson.

Thirty-four prizes were awarded in the junior division for entrants ages 12 to 18, and 36 prizes were awarded in the senior division, nearly doubling the awards total from the previous year. The cash prizes were also increased to $1,000 from $750 in the senior division and $250 from $200 in the junior division.

Prizes in both divisions were awarded in literary arts, musical composition and visual arts. Senior awards were presented by Minister Hedderson, and Mr. Major presented the junior awards. The Percy Janes First Novel Award was presented to Degan Davis for his manuscript The Forgetting Room. This award increased to $1,500 from $1,000.

"This year marked a substantial increase in funding for the program. We now have 70 awards, with prize money totaling $46,000," said Mr. Major. "It demonstrates the commitment of the Provincial Government to the Arts and Letters Awards, and to the creative talent at work throughout Newfoundland and Labrador."

The presentation of awards was interspersed with readings, a visual presentation and performances by some of this yea's winners. Selected entries are on display on the fourth floor of The Rooms until June 17, 2007. For further information visit www.gov.nl.ca/artsandletters.

"Since 1952, the Arts and Letters Awards have recognized some of Newfoundland and Labradors most talented artists," said Minister Hedderson. "Over the years thousands of professional and amateur artists from every part of the province have expressed themselves creatively through participation in the program, and they continue to do so in great numbers. I am pleased to note that this year almost 1,000 entries were submitted from artists from communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador."
