Tourism, Culture and Recreation April 27, 2007 The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador: 23 Scholarships/Bursaries Handed Out Sport Newfoundland and Labrador announced the recipients of scholarships/bursaries during the 16th Annual Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship Presentation during a reception at the Holiday Inn in St. John�s on Thursday. Twenty-three recipients received a scholarship/bursary in the amount of $500 for their contribution to sport during 2006. The Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship/ Bursary Program is designed to provide financial assistance to qualifying amateur athletes, coaches and officials (who are enrolled in a post secondary institution) to help offset the costs of training and competition. Sport Newfoundland and Labrador President, Tom Godden says, "We are extremely happy with the opportunity we have to support our provincial athletes, coaches and officials. Through programs such as this, we can assist in the development of amateur sport in Newfoundland and Labrador. Sport is such an important part of the lives of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. We are extremely pleased to support our athletes, coaches and officials." The recipients of Scholarships/Bursaries include: Athlete Category Rugby player Charlene Barter of St. John�s Athletic and Coach Category Gymnastics coach and athlete Lukas Stritt of St. John�s Sport Newfoundland and Labrador represents 44 provincial sport organizations in Newfoundland and Labrador providing programs and services in the promotion of sport and physical activity.
