Devereaux Rink Canadian Junior Women's Curling Champions

Newfoundland and Labrador has once again demonstrated supremacy in curling with a dramatic win by the Deveraux rink at the Canadian Junior Women's Curling Championships.

Stacie Devereaux and her rink from the St. John's Curling Club have scored a 7-6 victory against Manitoba, earning Newfoundland and Labrador its first-ever Canadian Junior Women's Championship. Deveraux secured the win by scoring three in the final end at the championship game in St. Catherine's, Ont.

"I watched this afternoon along with thousands of Newfoundlanders and Labadorians as the team threw the final rock to win the Canadian Junior Women's Championships and I could not be more thrilled for these fine young athletes," said Premier Williams. "They were deserving of this hard-earned win and on behalf of all of their fans here at home, I wish them a hearty congratulations.

"Our province has a well-deserved reputation for producing some of the best curlers in the world and the Deveraux rink follow in the footsteps of heroes like the Gushue rink and many others who have made a name for themselves nationally and internationally. I wish them all the best as they compete in the future, and thank them for providing our province with some spectacular curling this week."

"Once again Newfoundland and Labrador has demonstrated its domination in the great game of curling," said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Tourism Culture and Recreation Minister. "By securing this great win in such a dramatic fashion, these young women have not only made history by being the first rink from Newfoundland and Labrador to capture the Junior Women's Championship, they have also demonstrated they have the ability to perform with a grace under pressure and mental toughness that is the hallmark of our greatest players. These young women have a great future in curling and are already demonstrating that they are excellent ambassadors of sport for this province."
