Government to Hold Air Foodlift Subsidy Information Sessions

The Williams Government continues to demonstrate its unwavering support to Labradorians by launching information sessions throughout Labrador to ensure the effectiveness of the air foodlift subsidy program.

The Honourable John Hickey, Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs, announced today that starting Monday, July 30, the Department of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs will meet with retailers and the general public in nine Labrador communities.

"The people of Labrador face many challenges but the cost of fresh food should not be one of them," said Minister Hickey. "This government believes in this program; however we want to make sure that it is meeting the needs of the people of Labrador."

Feedback from the meetings will help officials evaluate the program and its value. The air foodlift subsidy program was developed in 1997 to ensure the people of coastal Labrador receive nutritious and perishable food items during the winter months. The Provincial Government invests $400,000 in the program in which a subsidy is paid to retail stores to offset the higher costs for perishable food flown into coastal communities. The subsidy enables retailers to lower their prices.

"This program is important to many aboriginal communities in coastal Labrador," said the Honourable Tom Rideout, Minister Responsible for Aboriginal Affairs. "I am glad government will be continuing the program and that food will be available at more reasonable costs for consumers."

The schedule for sessions is as follows:

  • Monday, July 30 Natuashish, 10:30 a.m.
  • Monday, July 30 Hopedale, 7:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, July 31 Postville, 1:30 p.m.
