Government to Hold Northern Strategic Plan Public Information Sessions

As promised, the Williams Government will continue to engage Labradorians in its unprecedented blueprint for Labradors future - the Northern Strategic Plan (NSP) unveiled just prior to Budget 2007.

Starting tonight (Tuesday, May 15), officials from the Department of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs will be visiting various communities throughout Labrador to provide information on the NSP, which is valued at over $250 million. This evenings session begins 7:00 at the Northern Cross Church, Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

"From the initial consultations through implementation, the people of Labrador have been, and will be, kept informed on initiatives and updated regularly," said the Honourable John Hickey, Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs. "The Department of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs will work closely with other departments and agencies to ensure the actions identified in the NSP are implemented over the next five years."

The Honourable Tom Rideout, Minister Responsible for Aboriginal Affairs, says the NSP is one of the highlights of Budget 2007 and it is important Labradorians have a clear understanding of the myriad of benefits outlined in the document.

"The NSP will provide improved infrastructure, programs and services for Labradorians and will enhance the quality of living for Labradorians," said Minister Rideout. "Just as importantly, this Labrador-exclusive plan will strengthen our provinces partnerships with Aboriginal communities."

Other regional sessions scheduled are:

  • May 22 2:00 p.m. Nain (Atsanik Lodge);
  • June 4 7:00 p.m. Port Hope Simpson (Alexis Hotel);
  • June 5 7:00 p.m. West St. Modeste (Oceanview Resort);
  • June 7 7:00 p.m. Churchill Falls (Community Centre);
  • June 14 7:00 p.m. Labrador West (College of the North Atlantic - Room 106).
  • The NSP is the result of extensive public consultations and input, supplemented by cross-departmental efforts, and identifies a wide range of initiatives dedicated to advancing programs and services for all Labradorians. The NSP builds upon the past successes of the Williams Government as it relates to Labrador. These include funding of $56 million in 2005 for key initiatives to continue the development, diversification and well-being of Labrador, and an investment of over $47 million in Budget 2006 to address the infrastructure needs in the region.
