Province Supports Smallwood Crescent Homework Haven
The Provincial Government is supporting the
educational needs of young people in Marystown who participate in the
Smallwood Crescent Community Centre (SCCC) Homework Haven program.
Through its grants and contributions program, the Department of Human
Resources, Labour and Employment is providing $10,000 to support the
program this fiscal year. "This government recognizes that Homework Haven
programs are about members of the community supporting and encouraging
academic success for children and youth," said the Honourable Shawn
Skinner, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and Minister
Responsible for Newfoundland Labrador Housing. "Government is pleased to
provide financial support again this year. This will enable
approximately 50 Smallwood Crescent Community Centre Homework Haven
participants to continue to receive help with their school work." Homework Haven is a volunteer-based initiative that
provides individual-based schoolwork assistance for children and youth
during after-school hours. It is available to students from elementary
to high school grades. The program is provided by volunteers who use a
tutor-based approach. Homework Haven is a valuable resource for families
and local schools. "Homework Haven is another successful example of
community engagement and support for young people, and I wish Smallwood
Crescent Community Centre well as they move this important initiative
forward in Marystown," said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, MHA for
Burin-Placentia West. In operation for over 10 years, the SCCC is a
non-profit organization supported by Newfoundland Labrador Housing. It
provides a variety of social, recreational, cultural and educational
opportunities for children and families. SCCC promotes a positive
community-based environment built on respect, courtesy and dignity. "Homework Haven is a wonderful program that helps many
children in our area, and we are happy to continue to offer the
program," said Lisa Keating, executive director of the Smallwood
Crescent Community Centre.
