Province Congratulates Outstanding Performances
by Newfoundland and Labrador Athletes

Newfoundland and Labrador athletes continue to excel in sports at the highest level, capturing medals in national and international competition.

At the Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse, George Kalunga-Loksa of St. Johns took a silver medal in boxing, Matthew and Alexandra Young of Corner Brook captured bronze in pre-novice fixed pairs figure skating, and Kaetlyn Osmond of Marystown secured a bronze in pre-novice single female figure skating.

In curling, Stacie Devereaux and her team took silver at the world junior curling championships in Eveleth, Minnesota, while Brad Gushue finished second at the Canadian mens curling championships in Hamilton, Ontario. Back in St. Johns, the MUN Seahawks took full advantage of home court to capture a bronze medal at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport womens basketball tournament.

"What a phenomenal time for competitive sports in Newfoundland and Labrador," said the Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. "The three medals at the Canada Winter Games are themselves a great cause for celebration. Then Teams Gushue and Devereaux put off two fine displays of curling skills in championship play, and to top it all off our Memorial Sea-Hawks made history by catching their first-ever national medal at a tournament hosted at Memorial. I extend the warmest congratulations to all of these athletes for their fantastic displays of athletic prowess on the national and world stage."

"These excellent teams of young men and women are demonstrating that they have what it takes to compete at the elite levels of sport," said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Tourism Culture and Recreation. "Newfoundland and Labrador athletes continue to excel at national and international levels. The great performances by our Canada Games athletes, the MUN Seahawks and teams Gushue and Devereaux are demonstrating that our place on the national and world stage is assured."

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, in recognition of the critical value of investment in recreation and sport activity, is in the final stages of preparing a Provincial Recreation and Sport Strategy that will outline the positive role sport and physical activity play in personal health and in the strengthening of community and family bonds.
