Extension Approved for Wesleyville High School

Government has allocated $100,000 to develop a tender package and begin planning for renovations and an extension to Lester Pearson Memorial High in Wesleyville, with an anticipated completion date of September, 2009. This funding is part of the $33 million allocated in Budget 2007 for extensions, renovations and new construction. The school serves the areas of New-Wes-Valley and Greenspond.

"The Nova Central School Board indicated in its five-year plan its intention to accommodate all K-12 students in the New-Wes-Valley area in an extended Lester Pearson High School. Additionally, high school students from Lumsden will attend this school which will mean an improved high school program for students," said the Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Education. "Government recognized the significant educational opportunities this will mean and has approved funding to begin the extension and renovations."

The board plans for high school students from the Lumsden area to begin attending school in Wesleyville, starting this September. However, Memorial Academy, the K-6 school in Wesleyville, will not close until renovations to Lester Pearson are complete.

"High school students deserve the highest quality programming we can give them, regardless of where they live in the province," said Minister Burke. "They must have the resources to succeed at the post-secondary level and beyond. By locating all high school students in this area in one central high school, they will all be able to avail of increased learning opportunities."

Thomas Kendall, chair of the Nova Central School Board, said, "We are pleased to be able to accommodate students from Lumsden High School this year, and with the extension we look forward to providing quality programs to students who will attend the current Lester Pearson High once the project is complete."

Harry Harding, MHA for the District of Bonavista North was also pleased with news that this project is set to proceed. "This is great news for students and teachers, and for the district as a whole," said Mr. Harding. "I know there are many demands for educational dollars, and I am pleased funding has been allocated to support the young learners in the New-Wes-Valley and area."

The minister concluded, "Supporting students is more than providing new curriculum and resources. This is why government is making unprecedented investments in maintenance and construction projects. We are determined to provide the highest quality education possible in all areas of the province."
