Significant Additions Announced for The Rooms Military Collections

Researchers and residents of the province now have access to new in-depth personal information and knowledge about the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. The Rooms Provincial Archives has accepted a Regiment Book of Wills to its permanent military collection and has welcomed home a rare eighteenth century watercolor depicting Fort Townshend and Regiment soldiers on the Grand Battery Wall.

"These two significant additions will enhance the already rich military collections of the Rooms," said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "The Regiment Book of Wills will be added to the permanent collection of The Rooms Provincial Archives. It was saved from destruction by local firefighter Captain Carl King when he discovered it in the basement of an old fire hall." The book was turned over to Helen Miller of the City of St. Johns Archives, who has donated the originals, microfilm, a searchable CD produced by the City Archives staff - and hard copies to The Rooms.

The Honourable Tom Osborne, Minister of Health and Community Services, assisted The Rooms in bringing another important work into its collection. "I learned of the existence of a rare watercolor of Fort Townshend which was in the collection of an art gallery in the United States," Said Minister Osborne. "Given the historical significance of this piece, I discussed it with Premier Williams and we were both determined to bring the piece to this province."

The watercolor dates back to 1795 and is one of the only known images of His Majestys Royal Newfoundland Regiment of Foot and an artilleryman of the 27th Company-2nd Battalion Royal Regiment of Artillery standing on the Grand Battery Wall of Fort Townshend. The watercolor is on temporary loan from Brown University in Rhode Island until the end of January 2007.

"We hope that over the coming days the public will come to The Rooms to view these two additions and to take part in War and Remembrance, a series of commemorative events taking place to honor the sacrifices made for the freedoms we enjoy," concluded Minister Hedderson.
