2006-07 Season Starting This Weekend

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador kicks off its 2006-07 season this coming weekend with four provincial tournaments scheduled. Champions will be declared in boys soccer and girls slo pitch.

The 3A Girls Slo Pitch championships are being hosted by Roncalli High in Port Saunders. A total of eight teams are vying for the coveted championship banner. Division A will see action from the host, Roncalli Central High, J. M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate), Marystown Central High and Baltimore School (Ferryland). Facing off in division B will be Burgeo Academy, Stella Maris Academy (Trepassey), Tricentia Academy (Arnolds Cove) and Indian River High (Springdale). The tournament will use fields in Port Saunders and Port au Choix for the round robin games on Friday. The top two teams from each division will advance to the semi-final play on Saturday, played at the Port Saunders field. The championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Stephenville High is the host school for the 4A Girls Slo Pitch championships. Eight teams are also in contention for the championship banner in this event. Playing on Diamond A will be Queen Elizabeth High (Foxtrap), Corner Brook High, Gander Collegiate and Stephenville High. Competition on Diamond B will be between Roncalli High (Avondale), Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony), Holy Trinity High (Torbay) and St. James Regional High (Port aux Basques). Games get underway 9:30 Friday morning on both field and round robin play continues throughout Friday and into Saturday morning. The semi-final games will be played between the top two teams from each division 10:30 Saturday morning with the championship game set for 12 noon.

The high school boys will take to the soccer pitches this coming weekend in a bid to be crowned Provincial School Sports 3A Soccer champions. The 3A boys will be hosted by Belanger Memorial in Doyles. Playing in Division A will be Mealy Mountain Collegiate (Happy Valley-Goose Bay), Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts) and the host, Belanger. Division B will consist of Indian River High (Springdale) John Burke High (Grand Bank) and Templeton Academy (Gillams). The tournament starts 8:30 Friday morning with the first round robin contest scheduled, and continues throughout the day. The cross overs involving the top two teams from each division, are scheduled for Saturday morning, with the top two teams advancing to Saturday afternoon�s championship game.

Marystown Central High School will host five other schools in their bid for the provincial banner for the 4A Soccer. Division 1 playing out of the Lower Field will consist of the host team - Marystown Central High, Mount Pear Senior High and Booth Memorial (St. John�s). Division 2, playing at Upper Field will see action from Holy Heart of Mary High (St. John�s), O�Donel High (Mount Pearl) and Corner Brook High. Round robin games are scheduled for 9, 12:30 and 4 on Friday. The semi-final will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning with the championship being declared after the 2 p.m. championship game.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the Team Sportsmanship Banner, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted championship banner.
