Minister expresses condolences

Tom Hedderson, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, sends condolences today to the family of esteemed writer and producer Tom Cahill who died Friday at the age of 77. Mr. Cahill, whose deep love of Newfoundland and Labrador history inspired his work, played a key role in the development of the local theatre scene.

"Tom Cahill set a high standard for professionalism within the cultural community," said Minister Hedderson. "He told our stories and promoted our culture with passion, truth, humour and insight. He influenced countless young playwrights and he will be dearly missed by the entire province."

Mr. Cahill worked as a producer with CBC for many years and produced numerous classics including As Loved Our Fathers and The Sir Humphrey Gilbert Story. He will also be remembered for his songs, such as Thank God Were Surrounded by Water and The Mobile Goat. In addition, Mr. Cahill was instrumental in launching the career of singer Joan Morrissey.

Mr. Cahill continued to write plays and direct local theatre after his retirement and served as chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council. He received numerous awards throughout his lifetime for his writing. In 2005, he was inducted into the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador for his contribution to the cultural heritage of the province.
