The following is being distributed at the request of School Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:
School Sport Newfoundland and Labrador championships this weekend

Six provincial high school champions will be declared this coming weekend as School Sport Newfoundland and Labrador continues with its winter schedule. The girls will be involved in four basketball finals, while two boys hockey tournaments are also taking place.

The Fair Play girls basketball tournament is being hosted by Clarenville High School. Clarenville hosted and won the boys Fair Play basketball championships last weekend. Teams contesting the female title include: St. Kevins�s High (Goulds), Lewisporte High, Clarenville High and Tricentia Academy (Arnolds Cove) in division A. In division B, Elwood High (Deer Lake), Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), Baccalieu Collegiate (Old Perlican) and Mobile High. Games get underway 9:30 a.m. Friday and continue throughout the day at both Clarenville High School and Balbo Elementary. The championship game is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. on Saturday.

Belanger Memorial in Doyles is the host school for the girls 2A basketball provincials. Six teams will be competing for top honours in a two-division format. In division A, Lakewood Academy (Glenwood), Bonne Bay Academy (Woody Point) and the host, Belanger Memorial, will square off. Seeing action in division B will be St. Lawrence Academy, Stella Maris High (Trepassey) and St. Mary�s All Grade (Mary�s Harbour). The top team from each division will receive a bye into the semi-finals. In the quarter finals, the second in each division will play the third in the other. The winners of these games meet the first place in the division in the semi-finals. The championship game will follow. All playoff games will take place Saturday beginning at 8:00 a.m.

St. Catherines Academy in Mount Carmel is the host school for the girls 3A basketball event. Eight teams will play in a two-division round robin format starting 9:00 a.m. on Thursday. Playing in division A will be St. Catherines, Baltimore High (Ferryland), J.M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate) and Baie Verte High. In division B, Carbonear Collegiate, Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point), Stephenville High and Menihek High (Labrador City) face off. Round-robin games will be played throughout Thursday and Friday. The championship game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The girls 4A basketball championships will take place in Avondale, hosted by Roncalli High. Eight teams will be featured in this tournament. Facing off in the white division will be Roncalli High, Gander Collegiate, Mount Pearl Senior High and Holy Heart of Mary High (St. John�s). Playing in the red division will be Gonzaga High (St. John�s), St. Kevins (Goulds), Laval High (Placentia) and Mobile High. The opening ceremonies are scheduled for 10:45 a.m. on Thursday followed by the start of the round-robin games. The round-robin schedule continues throughout Thursday and Friday. The top teams meet in the cross overs on Saturday morning with the winners facing off in the championship game at 3:00 p.m.

Indian River High in Springdale is the host school for the boys 3A hockey provincials. Eight teams will be vying for the provincial banner. Division A will see action from Roncalli High (Port Saunders), Indian River High, Appalachia High (St. Georges) and Stella Maris High (Trepassey). Facing off in division B will be Baie Verte High, Botwood Collegiate, Lester Pearson Memorial (Wesleyville) and St. Michael�s High (Bell Island). Games get underway 9:00 a.m. Thursday, and continue throughout Thursday and Friday. The top two teams from each division advance to the semi-finals scheduled for 9:00 and 11:00 on Saturday. The championship game features the two winning teams at 6:00 p.m.

Exploits Valley High in Grand Falls-Windsor is the host school for the boys 4A hockey provincials. The championship banner, as well as the Boyle Trophy, is on the line at this tournament. Facing off in division A will be O�Donel High (Mount Pearl), Holy Heart of Mary High (St. John�s), Gander Collegiate and Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista). In division B, the host, Exploits Valley High, will face Regina High (Corner Brook), Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts) and Gonzaga High (St. John�s). The tournament starts at 9:00 a.m. Thursday at Joe Byrne Stadium and continues throughout Thursday and Friday. The two cross over games will be played 9:00 a.m. on Saturday with the championship game set to go at 3:00 p.m.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sport Newfoundland and Labrador is sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the Team Sportsmanship Banner, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted championship banner.
