NOTE TO EDITORS: Minister to attend 2006 East Coast Music Awards

Tom Hedderson, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, will be attending the awards gala in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, tonight to support local artists nominated for East Coast Music Awards, the premier music event in Atlantic Canada.

"The nominations represent the depth and diversity of our talent pool in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Hedderson. "It�s going to be a great show and I congratulate the many talented artists who will be showcasing our province tonight."

Three acts from the province received double nominations: Colleen Power (Face and Eyes) for female artist of the year and folk recording of the year; The Novaks (Goodbye Rock n' Roll Band) for rising star of the year and video of the year; and Duane Andrews for male artist of the year and instrumental recording of the year for his self-titled album.

Other local nominees include: Great Big Sea (The Hard and the Easy); Christina Smith and Jean Hewson (August Gale) in the roots/traditional group recording of the year category; Jason Greeley (Live...Love...Sing) and Kevin Collins (Jump in and Swim) in the country recording of the year category; Cantus Vocum Chamber Choir (CV Spirit) and The Quintons (Always There) for gospel recording of the year; Mark Bragg (Bear Music) for alternative recording of the year; Patrick Boyle (Hold Out) for jazz recording of the year; Kathy Phippard (Premonition) for pop recording of the year; Jim Fidler (Midnight Rover) for roots/traditional solo recording of the year; and Crooked Stovepipe (Just In Case) in the bluegrass category.
