Trail Users Encouraged to Abide by Snowmobile Regulations

Snowmobile operators are advised that provincial conservation officers will be actively enforcing regulations associated with the Motorized Snow Vehicles and All-Terrain Vehicle Act throughout the province this winter on trails sanctioned by the Newfoundland and Labrador Snowmobile Federation (NLSF) and by Labrador Winter Trails Inc. (LWTI).

"I encourage everyone to familiarize themselves with the regulations before taking to the groomed trail system this winter," said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Natural Resources. "Our conservation officers will be conducting regular patrols and will be using their authority to issue penalties against those who choose to use the trail system illegally."

A trail sticker is required by law for snowmobile operators when riding on NLSF and LWTI managed trails. Penalties can be up to a $200 fine for a first offence.

"We have a wonderful infrastructure of 5,500 km of groomed trails throughout the province," said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "The revenue generated from sticker sales is used to preserve a significant amount of this trail system infrastructure. This increases the enjoyment of the trails by snowmobile enthusiasts, while also encouraging growth in the snowmobile industry and the winter tourism sector."

For the island portion of the province, residents are reminded that an early bird price of $60 for a trail sticker is in effect up to and including Friday, December 15. After that deadline, trail stickers will cost $80. Prices include HST. More information can be obtained from the NLSF office at 1-877-635-4395.

Labrador residents are advised that trail stickers for the south coast and the Straits cost $60 plus HST, while stickers for central and western Labrador cost $100 plus HST. More information can be obtained from LWTI by calling 1-877-884-7669.
