New and improved infrastructure for Harbour Authority of Fortune

The Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development has awarded $138,073 to the Harbour Authority of Fortune (HAF) to improve port infrastructure.  The funds come from the departments Regional/Sectoral Diversification Fund.

The improvements will increase port capacity for domestic and foreign cargo, ferry and pleasure vessels and will enhance business activity by developing the western side of Fortune harbour. The project involves the modification and relocation of existing infrastructure, as well as adding 12 floating docks to increase port capacity and alleviate congestion for foreign and Canadian vessels using the port.

Regions can capitalize on industrial diversification opportunities if the necessary infrastructure and services are available, said Trevor Taylor, acting Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, and Minister of Transportation and Works.  Increasing capacity at Fortune harbour will help to increase the volume of vessel traffic, which translates into economic spin-offs for the area.

Governments Comprehensive Regional Diversification Strategy has identified such sectors as marine services, international trade and tourism as strategic growth opportunities for the Burin Peninsula.  The HAF currently serves businesses operating in all of these sectors and the availability of these services in Fortune is essential to increased economic activity in the town and for the region.

This project is very important for the Harbour Authority of Fortune, the Town of Fortune, and the entire peninsula, said HAF chairperson, Lloyd Price.  This funding allows us to move forward in a positive direction, which includes creating employment, infrastructure and economic development opportunities for this area.

The Regional Sectoral Diversification Fund is a $5 million fund of the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development and a component of the provinces Comprehensive Regional Diversification Strategy.  The fund provides non-repayable contributions to economic development agencies for initiatives that address regional and sectoral development and diversification.
