Premier Encourages Applicants for Athletic Awards

The provinces athletes will have the opportunity to be recognized for their athletic achievements while also receiving financial assistance towards the costs of training and competition. The Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today encouraged all eligible athletes to submit an application for the 2007 Premiers Athletic Awards.

"These awards recognize and celebrate the athletic excellence and talent of the young people of this province," said Premier Williams. "Our government is proud to support our athletes with this program that both acknowledges and invests in their incredible skills and achievements. I encourage all who are eligible to participate in the application process."

The Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, noted that the Premiers Athletic Awards are designed to assist the provinces athletes by providing financial assistance to allow them to compete at national and international levels. "The province has allotted $75,000 for the program," said Minister Hedderson. "This investment supports the development of our finest athletes by helping to offset the high costs incurred when competing outside of the province."

The Premier's Athletic Awards Program is open to all residents of Newfoundland and Labrador who are attending school and registered with a provincial sport organization recognized by the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. Along with other criteria, athletes must have competed or will compete for Newfoundland and Labrador at the Canada Games or at other national and regional competitions.

"Our investment in the Premiers Athletic Awards reflects our overall commitment to promoting wellness and healthy living for all residents of this province," added Premier Williams. "I anticipate a great response to this program and look forward to announcing the recipients of the awards once the process is complete."

The deadline for applications is January 5, 2007. Further information about the program can be obtained through provincial sport organizations or by going to //www.gov.nl.ca/tcr
