Premier Williams praises Premier Klein as a colleague and friend

Premier Danny Williams today extended his best wishes to Alberta Premier Ralph Klein who announced he will be retiring from politics.

"Premier Klein is the elder statesman of Canadian politics and has given tremendous governance to the people of Alberta," said Premier Williams. "He has turned the economic fortunes of Alberta around, and has given dedicated and unwavering public service to the people of that province. Premier Klein has also been a leader around the table at the Council of the Federation, and has proven himself to be one of the greatest premiers in Canadian history. I count him as a great colleague and ally and more important, a great friend."

Premier Klein was sworn in as premier of Alberta in 1992 and has won four consecutive majority governments since that time. Among his many accomplishments has been his success in eliminating both the deficit and debt of Alberta and establishing the lowest tax regime in the country.

"During my tenure in elected life I have come to know Premier Klein well and have always respected his abilities and what he has accomplished for Alberta," added Premier Williams. "I wish Premier Klein my very best as his political career ends and he opens a new chapter in his life. Alberta, and indeed Canada, will miss his colourful ways, his frank approach to the issues, and his vast experience and knowledge. I am confident he will find a new challenge in life and continue to excel wherever his path may take him."
