Minister announces awarding of contract for upgrades to Route 230

Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and Works, and Paul Oram, MHA for Terra Nova, along with Ross Wiseman, MHA for Trinity North, and Roger Fitzgerald, MHA for Bonavista South, today announced that J-1 Contracting Limited has been awarded a contract to complete road work along Route 230, the Bonavista Peninsula Highway. Funding for this work is made available under the 2005-06 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

J-1 Contracting Limited, Clarenville, has been awarded a contract valued at $1,648,812 to construct a 1.2. km road diversion on Route 230 near Morleys Siding.

This years roads program is valued at $48.7 million, including carryovers, said Minister Rideout. This is one of the largest programs in years, and represents an $18.7 million increase over the 2004-05 Provincial Roads Improvement Program. Under this years program, our department has worked to ensure that a number of the major infrastructure concerns in the province have been addressed. We are very pleased with the progress we have made thus far and the driving experience throughout Newfoundland and Labrador has greatly improved.

We will continue to implement road projects as we work to complete this years program. To that end, I am pleased that work to complete upgrades on Route 230 can now commence.

The awarding of this contract is great news for the entire area, said Mr. Oram. Residents in all three districts will soon see the benefits of this significant infrastructure initiative.

Mr. Wiseman said, I am pleased that this contract has been awarded. I look forward to the completion of this work and the benefits it will bring to the people in my area in the way of increased public safety and an improved driving experience.

I am looking forward to the completion of the upgrades along Route 230, said Mr. Fitzgerald. This is an important roadwork initiative and I am pleased that the contract has now been awarded allowing work to proceed.

Minister Rideout said, Our government will continue to implement initiatives such as the provincial roads program as it creates employment opportunities and contributes to stimulating local economies. This is part of governments overall plan to provide Newfoundland and Labrador with the tools necessary for it to succeed in an increasingly competitive global economy.
