Minister Rideout said, "Funding for road work in the province has seen
two significant increases from its initial allocation of $33.7 million
in Budget 2005. Our summer roads program is currently valued at $48.7
million, which includes $3.7 million in carryovers from last year. This
years program provides funding for a number of upgrades and
improvements, ensuring that road users in this province have access to a
safe and reliable transportation infrastructure. Work will include the
resurfacing of major trunk roads, and upgrades to community access and
local roads.
Tom Hedderson, MHA for Harbour Main-Whitbourne, is pleased that the
provincial government is acting on the need for improved roadways.
This is a substantial amount of funding for upgrading and resurfacing
roads in the area. As a government, one of our strategic investments is
in improved roadways throughout the province. Some might say that we are
ultimately paving the way for a safer tomorrow.
"Our government values our highway infrastructure and recognizes the
need to provide road users with access to a safe and reliable
transportation network," said Minister Rideout. "Our government will
continue to invest in our transportation network for the benefit of all
Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. I am delighted to see that road work
will now be initiated for the Harbour Main-Whitbourne District.
This work is scheduled to be completed by September 30.
