Minister announces awarding of contract for road work in

Harbour MainWhitbourne District

Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and Works, and Tom Hedderson, MHA for Harbour Main-Whitbourne and Minister of Education, today announced that Concord Paving Limited has been awarded a contract to complete road improvements in the Harbour Main-Whitbourne District. This road work is funded under the 2005-06 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

Concord Paving Limited, Carbonear, has been awarded a contract valued at $1,316,797 to complete the following projects:

  • Upgrading and paving approximately 0.7 km of Church Road in Harbour Main;

  • Resurfacing approximately 2.5 km of Route 60 from Northside Road, Holyrood toward Lakeview;

  • Resurfacing approximately 2.0 km of Harbour Drive, Colliers;

  • Upgrading and paving approximately 0.7 km of Bullcove Road, Georgetown;

  • Resurfacing approximately 0.3 km of Georgetown Road;

  • Upgrading and paving approximately 1.7 km of Route 81, Markland Road.

Minister Rideout said, "Funding for road work in the province has seen two significant increases from its initial allocation of $33.7 million in Budget 2005. Our summer roads program is currently valued at $48.7 million, which includes $3.7 million in carryovers from last year. This years program provides funding for a number of upgrades and improvements, ensuring that road users in this province have access to a safe and reliable transportation infrastructure. Work will include the resurfacing of major trunk roads, and upgrades to community access and local roads.

Tom Hedderson, MHA for Harbour Main-Whitbourne, is pleased that the provincial government is acting on the need for improved roadways.  This is a substantial amount of funding for upgrading and resurfacing roads in the area.  As a government, one of our strategic investments is in improved roadways throughout the province. Some might say that we are ultimately paving the way for a safer tomorrow.

"Our government values our highway infrastructure and recognizes the need to provide road users with access to a safe and reliable transportation network," said Minister Rideout.  "Our government will continue to invest in our transportation network for the benefit of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. I am delighted to see that road work will now be initiated for the Harbour Main-Whitbourne District.

This work is scheduled to be completed by September 30.
