Minister announces awarding of contract for road work in Humber Valley

Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and Works, and Kathy Goudie, MHA for Humber Valley , today announced that Island Aggregates and Ready Mix has been awarded a contract to carry out road work in the Humber Valley District.  This project is funded under the 2005-06 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

Island Aggregates and Ready Mix, Deer Lake , has been awarded a contract valued at $999,209 to pave 2.3 km of Route 431 from Trout River Intersection at Woody Point to the boundary of Gros Morne National Park .  Paving will continue along Route 431 from the end boundary of the park to the Town of Trout River, with 2.4 km of road being resurfaced.  This contract also includes repaving 3.5 km of Route 420 near Pollards Point.

Our government is committed to providing Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, as well as visitors and tourists, with a solid transportation infrastructure on which to travel, said Minister Rideout.  We have allocated $45 million for our roads program this year, in addition to the $3.7 million to be carried over from last year.  This is a very significant investment, and we are committed to maximizing the benefits that are associated with reliable roads.  These include safety, an increase in visitors to our province and employment opportunities.

Ms. Goudie said, I am pleased that the contract has been awarded for the completion of road work in my district.  People will soon see the benefit of nearly $1 million worth of road improvements in the Humber Valley area.  This is indeed money well spent and I look forward to seeing the work completed over the next couple of months.

Minister Rideout said, The department is pleased that we have been able to expediently call tenders for our road projects and begin to award contracts for completion of the work.  In this way, our residents can begin to see and experience the results of our commitment to revitalize the transportation infrastructure in Newfoundland and Labrador .

Work is anticipated to be complete by mid-September.
