Minister announces awarding of contract for road work in Labrador West

Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and Works, today announced that H.J. OConnell Construction Limited has been awarded a contract to complete road improvements in the District of Labrador West.  This road work is funded under the 2005-06 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

H.J. OConnell Construction Limited, Wabush, has been awarded a contract valued at $591,675 to resurface Route 500 from Labrador City toward the Quebec border.

Our government has allocated significant funding for road work in the province during this fiscal year, said Minister Rideout.  We have twice increased our initial allocation of $33.7 million, and our summer roads program is currently valued at $48.7 million, which includes $3.7 million in carryovers from last year.

We are committed to revitalizing the transportation infrastructure in Newfoundland and Labrador, and over the past couple of months we have distributed these monies in a manner which our department feels will make best use of this funding, and will address the most pressing issues that currently face our provinces roads.

The minister added that he is pleased the road work planned in the Labrador West District will now be commenced.

The residents of Labrador West and other regions of our province continue seeing the fulfillment of our commitment to improve road conditions in Newfoundland and Labrador , said Minister Rideout.  This $591,675 contract for road improvements in Labrador West represents a significant step in this direction for that district.

This work is scheduled to be complete by September 30.
