Minister reiterates status of road winter maintenance

Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and Works, today reiterated the status of road winter maintenance.

Minister Rideout said: "My department employs the same number of supervisors this year that have been in place for a decade. Positions were changed from Maintenance Supervisors to Maintenance and Engineering Project Supervisors in 2004. However, there was no impact on winter maintenance operations.

"The Department of Transportation and Works also continues to maintain 56 winter depots throughout the province as it has for at least the last decade. The department consistently monitors our roads network with our regional staff. We have the same number of operators and pieces of equipment this year, as in previous years, to maintain our highway infrastructure.

"Above all else, our government values the safety and well-being of our citizens on our highways and this is especially true during the winter season. To that end, we have in place 24-hour dispatch lines, highway cameras and highway condition reports available on our Web site," said Minister Rideout.

"There has been no change in the winter maintenance policy or the number of maintenance supervisors. To suggest otherwise is doing a disservice to the people of our province," said the minister.

"My department makes every effort to have the roads cleared as quickly as possible. Our staff do their best and work very long hours to ensure that our roads are cleared during the winter months," continued the minister.
