The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

Provincial cross-country running championships this weekend in Plum Point

The province�s top cross-country runners will converge on Plum Point this coming weekend to compete in School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador�s Cross-Country Running championships. Both individual and team champions will be determined in four divisions: Senior Boys, Senior Girls, Junior Boys and Junior Girls.

Each team entry consists of five runners, with the top four counting towards the team total. The junior girls race will be run over a 2,000-metre course, senior girls and junior boys a 3,000-metre course, and the senior boys a 5,000-metre course.

Teams competing in the Senior Boys event include host Viking Trail Academy, Marystown Central High, Cape John Collegiate (LaScie), Appalachia High (St. George�s), Menihek High (Labrador City), Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), Victoria Academy (Gaultois), Canon Richards High (Flowers Cove), Roncalli High (Port Saunders), and Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony). The top team from each qualification meet advances to the provincial. In addition, the top three individuals, if not on the winning team, advance to compete for the individual title. Individual runners are from St. Lawrence Academy, Dorset Collegiate (Pilley�s Island), Regina High (Corner Brook), Holy Heart of Mary (St. John�s), Mobile High and Indian River High (Springdale).

The junior boys team entries include St. Lawrence Academy, Dorset Collegiate, Glovertown Academy, Presentation Junior High (Corner Brook), Fatima Academy (St. Brides), Canon
Richards High, Roncalli High, Cloud River Academy (Roddickton) and Harriot Curtis Collegiate and Viking Trail Academy. They will be joined by individual runners from Holy Name of Mary (Lawn), Baie Verte High, Appalachia High, Cow Head School, I.J. Sampson (St. John�s) and Victoria All Grade.

Competing in the senior girls team competition will be Holy Name of Mary, Stephenville High, Menihek High, Carbonear Collegiate, Victoria Academy (Gaultois), Harriot Cutis Collegiate, Canon Richards High, Roncalli High, Cloud River Academy and Viking Trail Academy. Competing as well in the individual competition will be Marystown Central High, Baie Verte High, Regina High, St. Peters Academy (Westport), Fogo Island Central High and Ascension Collegiate.

Rounding out the field will be the junior girls, including Dorset Collegiate, Glovertown Academy, Presentation Junior High, Mobile High, Canon Richards High, Roncalli High, Harriot Curtis Collegiate and Viking Trail Academy. Competing for individual honors include runners from Marystown Central High, St. Lawrence Academy, Baie Verte High, St. Joseph�s Academy (Lamaline), I. J. Sampson and Victoria All Grade.

The opening ceremonies will take place at 10:30 a.m., Saturday. The walk through for the races starts at 11:00 a.m., with competition scheduled for the following: 11:30 a.m., Junior Girls; 12:15 p.m., Junior Boys; 1:00 p.m., Senior Girls; 1:45 p.m., Senior Boys. The banquet and presentation of awards is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. Each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, and the top team in each division will receive the championship banner. Individual winners will be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals.
