Canada Games swim team off to a
great start
The Newfoundland and Labrador Canada Games Swim
Team competed as a team for the first time in a sanctioned mini-meet held in
Halifax, Monday, July, 4. Canada Games teams from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick,
and Prince Edward Island were all in attendance, providing a fantastic
opportunity to prepare for Canada Games in Regina in August.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Canada Games Team members broke three provincial
records, one individual record and two relay records showing great competitive
spirit, and the ability of this newly formed team.
Maggie Jones broke her own 50 breaststroke record of 36.70 seconds set at the
Colemans Winter Invitational, February 11, 2005 with a new time of 36.62. The
4x50 freestyle female relay team of Laura Murray, Adele Gagnon, Cassandra Jones
and Kelsey Alexander secured a first place finish and set a new provincial mark
of 1:52.75, smashing the open category record of 153.99 set 18 years ago (March
14, 1987) by Sherry Hounsell, Robin Tuck, Tracey Hogan, and Fiona Costello. The
4x50 Newfoundland medley relay team of Ashley Brown, Maggie Jones, Laura Murray
and Kelsey Alexander, finished first again and set a new provincial record of
2:04:96, shattering the 15-17 and the open category records of 2:08.29 set by
Renee Kelly, Laurie Green, Suzanne Drodge, and Andrea Hogan (March, 1, 1997).
Other highlights of the meet included first place finishes by Laura Murray in
the 50 metre butterfly and 200 freestyle, Tim Rusted in the 800 metre freestyle,
Kelsey Alexander in the 50 metre freestyle, Katrina Roxin in the 50 metre
freestyle (SWAD, swimmer with a disability category) and the male 4x50 freestyle
relay team of Tim Rusted, Darrin Marshall, Jonathan Furlong and David Forbes.
The team will continue to train in Halifax this week and is then off to a one
week training camp in Florida July 9.
All records are pending the verification process through Swim Newfoundland and
Labrador.
