School Sports Newfoundland and
Labrador (SSNL) is now accepting nominations for its annual awards.
An awards banquet will be held June 3 in conjunction with the SSNLs
Annual General Meeting, where all awards will be presented.
Nominations must be received from a school who is a member of SSNL
and must be on the official nomination form. The deadline for
receipt of nominations is April 22, 2005.
The following awards are open for nomination: Br. G.I. Moore
Student-Athletes of the Year, Coach of the Year, Coaching Service
Award and Honor Award.
The Br. G.I. Moore Student-Athlete of the Year Awards are presented
annually to the graduating male and female student-athlete who best
combines athletic and academic success and exemplifies the true
qualities of a student-athlete. Winners receive a $750 scholarship
from Newfoundland Power while 1st and 2nd runners-up receive $500
and $250 awards respectively from the provincial government,
Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.
The Coach of the Year Award, as the name indicates, is reserved for
the high school coach who has had an outstanding season of success
at high school events. Consideration is also given to past success
as well as the coaching philosophy of the individual.
A maximum of three coaching service awards are presented annually.
These awards are given in recognition of a long career in high
school coaching. Coaching service award winners will demonstrate
through a lengthy and successful coaching career, a strong
developmental program at the school(s) as well as a solid coaching
philosophy which is in line with the philosophy of SSNL.
The Honour Award is the most prestigious award SSNL presents to its
volunteers within School Sport. It is given to honour an
individuals long term commitment to the goals and mission of school
sport. The winner will have shown through work at the zone, regional
and provincial and/or provincial level, as a coach, convener, or
administrator, a commitment to furthering the objectives of school
sport.
In addition to these major awards which are decided by ballot from
the awards committee members, SSNL also recognizes the contribution
of volunteers at the grassroots level with 10 regional recognition
awards which are decided upon at the regional level.
One of SSNLs corporate sponsors - School Milk Foundation - sponsors
School of the Year Awards that are also presented on an annual
basis. Points for each school are tabulated throughout the school
year based on participation, success and sportsmanship in SSNL
events. The school in each classification amassing the most points
accumulated from all 12 sports are presented with the School of the
Year banner.
