Budget 2005 - Supporting creative people

Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Paul Shelley today announced an additional $160,300 in Budget 2005 for the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (NLAC), bringing the total budget to $900,000.  Supporting creative people and bringing stability to the conditions under which they work is a key building block of celebrating our identity and fostering creativity. Of the total amount, $100,300 will be added to the program budget, while $60,000 will be provided this fiscal year to support the NLAC's 25th anniversary.

"The Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council is the key vehicle by which government can support the creative process," said Minister Shelley.  "The NLAC is often the first agency to support artists and arts organizations, which in turn leverages funding from other agencies, communities and sponsors."

An increase in the program budget will effectively bring the total annual budget to $840,000, up from the previous $739,700. The increase in funding will enhance the NLAC's current programs and allow for the council to consider new programs.

"Across the country, governments are recognizing the importance of investing in the arts and arts organizations," said Minister Shelley.  "The NLAC will be a key player in the Strategic Cultural Plan that this government will introduce in the coming months.  I look forward to working with the board of directors to strengthen the council and the important support that it provides to artists in the province."

The mandate of the NLAC is to foster the arts of the province, the key vehicle by which government supports the creative process.  In 2003/04, NLAC provided grants to 201 artists and art organizations. The NLAC also provided $185,000 in grants to 31 artists and art organizations through two funding partner agreements: Aliant B Cultural Innovation Fund and The McConnell Foundation B ArtSmarts.
