2005 Newfoundland and Labrador Travel Guide available for distribution

Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Paul Shelley today announced that the 2005 Newfoundland and Labrador Travel Guide is now available for distribution. The full-colour guide features the breathtaking Gros Morne National Park UNESCO World Heritage Site on the cover and contains 200 pages of essential travel information to help tourists plan their visit to the province.

"Each and every year, more people are discovering a unique destination like no other - a vacation in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Shelley. "Ive discovered first-hand the many things that visitors find so appealing about Newfoundland and Labrador - the magnificent landscape and seascape, our history and culture and a pride of a people that is unmatched anywhere. Thats what makes Newfoundland and Labrador so special - our people. Wherever you travel in our province, you will encounter warm, friendly and inviting people who do their part to make your stay a memorable one."

The 2005 travel guide will aid tourists in planning their trip to Newfoundland and Labrador. This years magazine format Travel Guide includes information for each region of the province, providing details on attractions, adventures, shops, studios, galleries, museums, restaurants, festivals and events, accommodations and campgrounds. The guide features hundreds of photos taken throughout the province, from the historic Signal Hill in St. Johns to the best light show on earth - the Northern Lights in Labrador.

Stan Cook Jr., president of Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador said, "We are very pleased to see the release of the 2005 Newfoundland and Labrador Travel Guide. As one of the first available guides for distribution in the country, we welcome the public to use it to make their travel plans to our province and experience first-hand our fine hospitality and the many things we have to offer."

The Newfoundland and Labrador Travel Guide is distributed in response to all non-resident tourism inquiries generated through advertising and sales, inquiries to the tourism call centre, and direct mail, e-mail and Web site inquiries. The department will distribute approximately 200,000 copies of the guide throughout the year, primarily to inquiries in Canada and the Northeast United States. The travel guide is distributed to tour operators, wholesalers, group leaders and travel media, and is available at Canadian Tourism Commission offices in international key markets and in provincial and regional visitor information centres.

Judy Sparkes-Giannou, chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador Marketing Council, said: "The Newfoundland and Labrador Travel Guide is a key trip planning tool for tourists interested in visiting the province. This high quality publication, along with our Web site, provides two purposes - it helps to attract potential visitors to the province and provides them with vital information about things to see and do in the province once they are here."

The Newfoundland and Labrador tourism industry supports 25,000 direct and indirect jobs in the province and an estimated 2,400 businesses and is recognized as an area of incredible growth potential.
